3.1 The Purpose of the Creation of the Universe
피조물(被造物)의 창조가 끝날 때마다 그것이 하나님이 보시기에 선하였다고 기록되어 있는 창세기의 말씀을 보면(창 1 : 4∼31), 하나님은 스스로 창조하신 피조물이 선의 대상이 되기를 원하셨다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이처럼 피조물이 선의 대상이 되기를 원하신 것은 하나님이 그것을 보시고 기뻐하시기 위함이었다.
It is recorded in the Bible that after God completed each day of creation, He saw that it was good. (Gen. 1:4-31) This suggests that God wanted His creations to be object partners embodying goodness that He might take delight in them.
그러면 피조물이 어떻게 되어야만 하나님이 가장 기뻐하실 수 있을 것인가? 하나님은 만물세계를 창조(創造)하신 후, 끝으로 자기의 성상(性相)과 형상(形狀)대로 희로애락(喜怒哀樂)의 감성을 가진 인간을 창조하시어 그를 보시고 즐기려 하셨던 것이다. 그러므로 하나님이 아담과 해와를 창조하시고 나서, 생육하고 번식하여 만물세계를 주관하라(창 1 : 28)고 하신 3대 축복(三大祝福)의 말씀에 따라 인간이 하나님의 나라 즉 천국을 이루고 기뻐할 때에, 하나님도 그것을 보시고 가장 기뻐하실 것은 두말할 필요도 없다.
How can the creation give God the greatest joy? God created human beings as the final step in creating the universe. He created them in His image, in the likeness of His internal nature and external form, and gave them sensibility to all feelings and emotions because it was His intention to share joy with them. After their creation, God blessed Adam and Eve: Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. -Gen. 1:28 These are the three great blessings: to be fruitful (mature and ready to bear fruit), multiply and have dominion over the creation. Had Adam and Eve obeyed this divine mandate and built the Kingdom of Heaven, there is no doubt that God would have felt the greatest joy as His sons and daughters rejoiced in the world of His ideal.
그러면 하나님의 3대 축복은 어떻게 하여서 이루어지는 것인가? 그것은 창조의 근본 기대인 사위기대가 이루어진 터전 위에서만 이루어질 수 있는 것이다. 그러므로 하나님이 피조세계를 창조하신 목적은, 인간을 비롯한 모든 피조물이 하나님을 중심한 사위기대를 완성하고 3대 축복의 말씀을 이루어 천국을 이룩함으로써 선의 목적을 완성한 것을 보시고 기쁨을 누리시려는 데 있었던 것이다.
How can God’s three great blessings be fulfilled? They can be realized only when the four position foundation, which is the fundamental foundation of creation, has been established. The three great blessings are fulfilled when the whole creation, including human beings, completes the four position foundation with God as the center. This is the Kingdom of Heaven, where ultimate goodness is realized and God feels the greatest joy. This is, in fact, the very purpose for which God created the universe.
그러므로 인간을 중심한 피조세계(被造世界)가 존재하는 목적은 하나님에게 기쁨을 돌려드리는 데 있다. 그리고 모든 존재는 이중목적(二重目的)을 지닌 연체(聯體)인 것이다. 위에서 논술한 바와 같이 모든 존재의 중심에는 성상적인 것과 형상적인 것의 두 가지가 있기 때문에, 그 중심이 지향하는 목적에도 성상적인 것과 형상적인 것의 두 가지가 있어서, 그것들의 관계는 성상과 형상과의 관계와 같다. 그리고 성상적인 목적은 전체를 위한 것이고, 형상적인 목적은 그 자체를 위한 것이어서 전자와 후자는 원인적인 것과 결과적인 것, 내적인 것과 외적인 것, 주체적인 것과 대상적인 것의 관계를 가지고 있는 것이다. 그러므로 전체적인 목적을 떠나서 개체적인 목적이 있을 수 없고, 개체적인 목적을 보장하지 않는 전체적인 목적도 있을 수 없다. 따라서 삼라만상의 피조물은 이러한 이중목적에 의하여 얽혀 있는 하나의 굉대(宏大)한 유기체(有機體)인 것이다.
The ultimate purpose of the universe, with human beings at its center, is to return joy to God. All entities have dual purposes. As was explained earlier, every entity has dual centers of movement, one of internal nature and another of external form. These centers pursue corresponding purposes – for the sake of the whole and for the sake of the individual – whose relationship is the same as that between internal nature and external form. These dual purposes relate to each other as cause and result, internal and external, subject partner and object partner. In God’s ideal, there cannot be any individual purpose which does not support the whole purpose, nor can there be any whole purpose that does not guarantee the interests of the individual. The infinite variety of beings in the universe form one vast organic body interwoven by these dual purposes.
3.2 Good Object Partners for the Joy of God
하나님의 창조목적(創造目的)에 관한 문제를 더 상세히 알기 위 하여는, 우리가 어떠한 상태에 있을 때에 기쁨이 생기느냐 하는 문제를 먼저 알아야 한다. 기쁨은 독자적으로는 생기지 않는다. 무형이거나 실체거나 자기의 성상(性相)과 형상(形狀)대로 전개된 대상이 있어서, 그것으로부터 오는 자극으로 말미암아 자체의 성상과 형상을 상대적으로 느낄 때 비로소 기쁨이 생기는 것이다.
To understand more precisely the issues concerning God’s purpose of creation, let us first examine how joy is produced. Joy is not produced by an individual alone. Joy arises when we have an object partner in which our internal nature and external form are reflected and developed. Our object partner helps us to feel our own internal nature and external form through the stimulation it gives. This object partner may be intangible or it may be substantial.
하나의 예를 들면, 작가의 기쁨은 그가 가지고 있는 구상 자체가 대상이 되든가 혹은 그 구상이 회화(繪畵)나 조각 등의 작품으로 실체화하여 대상이 되었을 때, 그 대상으로부터 오는 자극으로 말미암아 자기의 성상(性相)과 형상(形狀)을 상대적으로 느낌으로써 비로소 생기게 된다. 이에 구상 자체가 대상으로 서게 될 때에는 그로부터 오는 자극이 실체적인 것이 아니기 때문에 그로 인한 기쁨도 실체적인 것이 될 수는 없는 것이다. 인간의 이러한 성품은 모두 하나님을 닮은 것이다. 그러므로 하나님도 그의 실체대상으로부터 오는 자극으로 말미암아 자체의 본성상(本性相)과 본형상(本形狀)을 상대적으로 느낄 때 비로소 기쁨을 누리시게 된다는 것을 알 수 있다.
For example, an artist’s object partner may be an idea in his mind, or the finished painting or sculpture which substantiates that idea. When he visualizes his idea or beholds his work, he is stimulated to feel his own internal nature and external form reflected in it and feels joy and satisfaction. When his idea alone is the object partner, it is not as stimulating, nor is the joy that it brings as profound, as that from a finished work. This nature of human beings originates in God’s nature. In like manner, God feels the fullness of joy when He is stimulated by His substantial object partners to feel His original internal nature and original external form through them.
사위기대(四位基臺)의 터전 위에서 3대 축복(三大祝福)에 의한 천국이 이루어지면, 이것이 바로 하나님이 기쁨을 느끼실 수 있는 선의 대상이 되는 것이라고 우리는 앞서 설명하였다. 그러면 이것이 어떻게 되어 하나님의 기쁨을 위한 선의 대상이 되는가 하는 것을 알아보기로 하자.
It was explained earlier that when the Kingdom of Heaven is realized – through the fulfillment of the three great blessings and the establishment of the four position foundation – it becomes the good object partner that gives joy to God. Let us investigate how the Kingdom becomes God’s good object partner.
하나님의 제1축복(第一祝福)은 개성을 완성하는 데 있다. 인간이 개성을 완성하려면, 하나님의 이성성상(二性性相)의 대상으로 분립된 마음과 몸이 수수작용을 하여 합성일체화함으로써 그 자체에서 하나님을 중심한 개체적인 사위기대(四位基臺)를 이루어야 한다. 하나님을 중심하고 마음과 몸이 창조본연의 사위기대를 이룬 인간은, 하나님의 성전(聖殿)이 되어(고전 3 : 16) 그와 일체를 이루기 때문에(요 14 : 20), 신성(神性)을 가지게 되어 하나님의 심정을 체휼함으로써 그의 뜻을 알고 그대로 생활하게 된다. 이와 같이 개성을 완성한 인간은 하나님을 중심한 그 마음의 실체대상이 되고, 따라서 하나님의 실체대상이 된다. 이에 그 마음이나 하나님은 이러한 실체대상으로부터 오는 자극으로 말미암아 그 자체의 성상과 형상을 상대적으로 느낄 수 있기 때문에 기쁨을 누리게 된다. 그러므로 인간이 하나님의 제1축복을 이루면 그것은 하나님의 기쁨을 위한 선의 대상이 되는 것이다. 이와 같이 개성을 완성한 인간은 하나님의 희로애락을 곧 그 자체의 것으로서 느끼게 되어 하나님이 서러워하시는 범죄행위를 할 수 없기 때문에 절대로 타락할 수 없는 것이다.
The key to God’s first blessing is the perfection of individual character. An individual’s mind and body are discrete projections and object partners of God’s dual characteristics. In order for an individual to perfect his character, he must form a four position foundation within himself whereby his mind and body become one through give and take action with God as their center. Such individuals become the temples of God, (I Cor. 3:16) achieve complete oneness with Him, (John 14:20) and acquire a divine nature. They experience the Heart of God as if it were their own. Hence, they understand His Will and live fully attuned to it. When a person abides in the state of individual perfection, he lives as the substantial object partner to his mind. Because the center of his mind is God, he also lives as the substantial object partner to God. Both the mind and God rejoice as they experience their internal nature and external form through the stimulation which their object partners give them. Accordingly, when people realize God’s first blessing, they become God’s beloved who inspire Him with joy. Sharing all the feelings of God as their own, they would never commit any sinful acts that would cause God grief. This means they would never fall.
다음으로 하나님의 제2축복(第二祝福)을 이루기 위하여는, 하나님의 이성성상(二性性相)이 각각 개성을 완성한 실체대상(實體對象)으로 분립된 아담과 해와가 부부가 되어 합성일체화함으로써 자녀를 번식하여 하나님을 중심한 가정적인 사위기대를 이루어야 한다. 이와 같이 하나님을 중심하고 사위기대를 이룬 가정이나 사회는 개성을 완성한 사람 하나의 모양을 닮게 되므로, 이것은 하나님을 중심한 인간의 실체대상이요, 따라서 하나님의 실체대상이 된다. 그러므로 인간이나 하나님은 이러한 가정이나 사회로부터 그 자체의 성상(性相)과 형상(形狀)을 상대적으로 느끼게 되어 기쁨을 누리게 된다. 따라서 인간이 하나님의 제2축복을 이루면 그것도 또한 하나님의 기쁨을 위한 선의 대상이 되는 것이다.
God’s second blessing was to be fulfilled by Adam and Eve after they had achieved individual perfection as object partners to God, each manifesting an aspect of God’s dual characteristics. In order to construct the four position foundation in their family, Adam and Eve should have joined in loving oneness as husband and wife and raised children. This would have been the fulfillment of the second blessing. A family or society that has formed the four position foundation in line with God’s ideal is patterned after the image of a perfect individual. It thus becomes the substantial object partner to the individual who lives in oneness with God, and consequently, it also becomes the substantial object partner to God. The individual feels joy, and likewise God feels joy, when each perceives in this family or community the manifestation of his own internal nature and external form. When God’s second blessing is fulfilled, this family or community also becomes a good object partner giving joy to God.
다음으로 인간이 하나님의 제3축복(第三祝福)을 이루게 되면 그것이 어찌하여 하나님의 기쁨을 위한 선의 대상이 되는가를 알아보기로 하자. 이 문제를 해명하기 위하여는 먼저 성상과 형상으로 본 인간과 만물세계와의 관계를 알아야 한다.
Before we examine how a person upon attaining the third blessing establishes a good object partner giving joy to God, we must first investigate the relationship between human beings and the creation from the viewpoint of internal nature and external form.
하나님은 인간을 지으시기 전에 앞으로 창조하시게 될 인간의 성상과 형상을 형상적으로 전개하여 만물세계를 창조하셨다. 그러므로 인간은 만물세계를 총합한 실체상이 되는 것이다. 인간을 소우주(小宇宙)라고 하는 이유는 바로 여기에 있다.
Prior to creating human beings, God created the natural world by expressing partial reflections of the internal nature and external form He had conceived for human beings. Consequently, a human being contains within himself the sum total of the essences of all things. This is the reason he is called the microcosm of the cosmos.
하나님은 하등동물에서부터 점차적으로 기능이 복잡한 고등동물들을 창조하시고, 마지막으로 최고급의 기능을 가진 존재로 인간을 창조하셨다. 그러므로 인간에게는 어떠한 동물의 구조(構造)와 요소(要素)와 소성(素性)도 다 구비되어 있는 것이다. 인간이 어떠한 동물의 소리도 다 낼 수 있다는 것은 곧 어떠한 동물의 발성기(發聲器)의 성능도 다 가지고 있다는 이야기가 되는 것이다. 그리고 인간은 어떠한 피조물의 형(形) 선(線)의 미(美)도 다 갖추고 있기 때문에 화가는 인간의 나체(裸體)를 모델로 하여 화법을 연마하는 것이다.
When God created living things, He began with creatures of a lower order. Over the course of time, He created animals of a higher order with more complex biological functions, culminating with human beings at the highest level. Therefore, human beings contain all the elements, structures and qualities found in animals. For example, human vocal cords are so versatile that they can imitate virtually any animal sound. Because the human body contains all the beautiful curves and lines of the creation, an artist hones his skills by drawing nude models.
인간과 식물을 놓고 보더라도 그 구조와 기능에는 차이가 있으나 모두 세포로 되어 있다는 점에서는 동일하다. 그리고 인간에게는 식물의 구조와 요소와 그의 소성이 모두 구비되어 있다. 즉 식물의 잎은 그 모양이나 기능으로 보아 인간의 폐(肺)에 해당된다. 잎이 대기 중에서 탄산가스를 흡수하는 것같이 폐는 산소를 흡수한다. 식물의 줄기와 가지는 인간의 심장(心臟)에 해당하는 것으로서 영양소를 전체에 공급한다. 그리고 식물의 뿌리는 인간의 위장(胃腸)에 해당하는 것으로서 영양소를 섭취한다. 더 나아가 식물의 사관(篩管)과 도관(導管)의 형태와 기능은 인간의 동맥과 정맥에 해당하는 것이다.
Although human beings and plants have different structures and functions, they are similar in that they both are composed of cells. All the elements, structures and characteristics of plants can be found in human beings. For example, a plant’s leaf corresponds to the human lung in appearance and function. As leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the human lung absorbs oxygen. Branches and stems of plants correspond to the human circulatory system, which distributes nourishment to the entire body; the xylem and phloem correspond to human arteries and veins. The roots of a plant correspond to the human stomach and intestines, which absorb nutrients.
한편 인간은 물과 흙과 공기로 창조되었기 때문에 광물질(鑛物質)의 요소도 가지고 있다. 지구도 인체 구조의 표시체로 되어 있는 것이다. 지구에는 식물로 덮인 지각(地殼)이 있고, 지층(地層) 속에는 지하천(地下泉)이 있으며, 그 밑에 암층(岩層)으로 둘러싸인 용암층(熔岩層)이 있는데, 이것은 마치 솜털로 덮인 피부가 있고, 근육 속에는 혈관이 있으며, 그 밑에 골격(骨格)과 골격으로 둘러싸인 골수(骨髓)가 있는 인체의 구성과 흡사하다.
Human beings were fashioned from clay, water and air; consequently they contain elements of the mineral kingdom. Moreover, the earth displays a similarity to the structure of the human body: the earth’s crust is covered with plants, its underground waterways exist inside the substrata, and beneath it all lies a molten core surrounded by a rocky mantle. This resembles the structure of the human body, which has skin covered with hair, blood vessels running inside the musculature, and marrow lying deeper still within the bones.
하나님의 제3축복(第三祝福)은 만물세계에 대한 인간의 주관성 완성을 의미한다. 인간이 이 축복을 이루기 위하여는, 하나님의 형상적 실체대상인 인간과 그의 상징적 실체대상인 피조세계가 사랑과 미(美)를 주고받아 합성일체화함으로써, 하나님을 중심한 주관적인 사위기대가 이루어져야 한다(본장 제 5절 Ⅱ.3 참조).
The meaning of God’s third blessing is the perfection of a human being’s dominion over the natural world. To fulfill this blessing, the four position foundation of dominion must be established centered on God. Human beings and the natural world, which are the substantial object partners of God at the level of image and symbol respectively, must share love and beauty to become completely one. (cf. Creation 5.2.3).
위에서 논한 바와 같이, 만물세계는 어디까지나 인간의 성상(性相)과 형상(形狀)을 실체로 전개해 놓은 그 대상이다. 그러므로 하나님을 중심한 인간은 그의 실체대상인 만물세계로부터 오는 자극으로 말미암아 자체의 성상과 형상을 상대적으로 느낄 수 있기 때문에 기쁨을 누리게 된다. 그리고 하나님은 위와 같이 인간과 만물세계가 합성일체화하여 하나님의 제3대상이 된 피조세계(被造世界)로 말미암아 하나님 자체의 본성상(本性相)과 본형상(本形狀)에 대한 자극적인 감성을 상대적으로 느끼심으로써 기쁨을 누리시게 되는 것이다. 인간이 이렇듯 하나님의 제3축복(第三祝福)을 이루면, 그것도 하나님의 기쁨을 위한 또 하나의 선(善)의 대상이 되는 것이다.
The natural world is an object partner which exhibits human internal nature and external form in diverse ways. Hence, ideal human beings receive stimulation from the world of nature. Sensing their own internal nature and external form displayed throughout the creation, they feel immense joy. God also delights when He experiences the stimulation of His original internal nature and original external form from the universe; this is possible when it becomes His third object partner through the harmonious union of human beings and the natural world. Therefore, when human beings realize God’s third blessing, the entire universe becomes yet another good object partner giving joy to God.
이와 같이 하나님의 창조목적(創造目的)이 이루어졌더라면 죄의 그림자조차도 찾아볼 수 없는 그러한 이상세계가 지상에 이루어졌을 것이니, 이러한 세계를 말하여 우리는 지상천국(地上天國)이라고 하는 것이다. 차후에 상세히 설명하겠지만, 원래 인간은 지상천국에서 생활을 하다가 육신을 벗으면 그와 동시에 영계에 가서 자동적으로 천상천국(地上天國)의 생활을 하도록 창조된 것이었다.
Had God’s purpose of creation been realized in this way, an ideal world without even a trace of sin would have been established on the earth. We call this world the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. When life in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth comes to a close, people are to enter the spirit world and naturally enjoy eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven there.
위에서 설명한 바 모든 사실들을 종합하여 볼 때, 천국은 하나님의 본성상과 본형상대로 개성을 완성한 인간 하나의 모양을 닮은 세계를 말한다는 것을 우리는 알 수 있게 된다. 인간에게 있어서 그 마음의 명령이 중추신경(中樞神經)을 통하여 그의 사지백체(四肢百體)에 전달됨으로써 그 인체가 하나의 목적을 지향하여 동(動)하고 정(靜)하는 것과 같이, 천국에 있어서는 하나님의 명령이 인류의 참부모를 통하여 모든 자녀들에게 전달됨으로써 모두 하나의 목적을 향하여 동하고 정하게 되는 것이다.
Based on the discussion thus far, we can understand that the Kingdom of Heaven resembles a person who has achieved individual perfection, taking after God’s original internal nature and external form. In an individual, the mind’s command is transmitted to the whole body through the central nervous system, causing the body to act with one purpose. Likewise, in the Kingdom of Heaven, God’s direction will be conveyed to all His children through the True Parents of humankind, guiding everyone to live as one.
